Abstract

In the process of language development, the increase in receptive language and expressive language in parallel with the development of children's vocabulary is considered very important. Developmental disruptions in the process of language development may lead to possible language disorders and social and academic problems in the future. It is thought that individuals who are obliged to take care of children, especially their parents, who take care of them in the family environment they are in from the first moment they are born, should be the ones who can recognize possible developmental findings observed in children. In this study, it was aimed to examine the level of knowledge of families and other caregivers about delayed language, since it is thought to be an important factor to support the social and academic development of children and to provide early intervention of existing developmental deviations. The survey was conducted with the participation of 30 parents with children aged 0-8 years living in Bursa region. The case study method was used, which allows for in-depth detailed investigation of the selected topic and the use of qualitative and quantitative techniques together. In case of suspicion of speech and language delay, it was recommended that pediatricians communicate with the family and make a referral to a Speech and Language Therapist when necessary. In addition, it was emphasized that scientific studies on the prevalence of speech and language delay in Turkey are insufficient. The study focused on the methods followed by parents in recognizing, intervening and treating language delay. It was concluded that parents had difficulty in making the comparison between the developmental characteristics of normally developing children and the developmental characteristics of children with delayed language disorder, but it was seen that they were aware of the importance of early intervention for the development of the child.
