Abstract

In the post-independence period, relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan have made significant progress in strengthening strategic, economic, and cultural ties. The Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2020 became one of the focal points of these relations. During this process, Turkey openly expressed its support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, further deepening the ties between the two countries and enhancing its influence on the international stage. Following this period, high-level meetings and agreements signed in 2021 and 2022, particularly in the military field, have strengthened the cooperation between the two nations. In this context, military training, joint exercises, and defense industry projects have been crucial steps in solidifying the integration between Turkey and Azerbaijan.

In economic relations, energy projects play a critical role. The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), in particular, has increased Turkey’s energy security while creating a significant source of revenue for Azerbaijan. This project not only strengthened the economic ties between the two countries but also contributed to Europe’s energy supply security by enhancing energy diversification. Moreover, the expansion of trade volume and the increase in mutual investments have provided momentum for the economic relations between the two nations.

In the cultural field, cooperation between the two countries is supported by joint projects that promote closer ties between their societies. Exchange programs in education and cultural events help foster mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of Turkey and Azerbaijan. The similarity between the Turkish and Azerbaijani languages facilitates cultural interaction, laying the groundwork for even closer relations between the two nations.

As of 2024, relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan are expected to develop further, playing a significant role in ensuring regional stability. These bilateral relations enable deeper political dialogues and a collective stance against common security threats. In conclusion, Turkey and Azerbaijan will continue to demonstrate a strong partnership on the international stage by further integrating in economic, political, and security domains. This strategic partnership will not only serve the interests of both countries but also contribute to the stability of the region.
